I don't even know whether these things exist.
But I'm looking for manuscripts of weapons we would consider "odd".
Mainly, I would love to find a manuscript of two swords.
But things like, axe and shield, gun shield, sword breaker, etc.

Looking to buy, mostly, so if anyone know of any, or at least point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

Announcement of the 53 new Videos Online Youtube.com!

Hi Folks,

I would just like to let everybody know that Arts of Mars Academy for HEMA has put up 53 video's up on Youtube. The channel is:

FioredieLiberi

at http://www.youtube.com

http://www.youtube.com/user/FioredieLibe...ulvwAtuQbU

BEFORE anyone says anything I made a mistake in the name of my channel, and it was a long time before I noticed it, so is life...................

These video's were shot sometime in late 2009 or early 2010, unfortunately it has taken us a long time to put them together as we have been blessed with another son this year and we had a lot on our hands. It was a fairly strenuous day with Colin teaching the class in German, then doing the video's in English, and then doing a test cutting session at the end of the afternoon. Colin then carried on and did more video's with one of our new people, Stefan Brachman. I wish to apologise for the lack lustre performance of some of the later video's, we had been on the go for 10 hours at that time. We have kept the editing to a minimum due to time considerations, so you will notice that Colin keeps on trying to speak German into the camera, well he was teaching the class in German! You will notice at least one Kurtz Position instead of Posta Breva or Short Position, which is not corrected.

The video's feature a wide variety of different weapons from a few masters. We cover some Wrestling in the Arms a la German style though with the techniques stemming from Fiore dei Liberi. These were envisaged as a sequence of techniques, each developing on from the previous one, with techniques and counters changing upon the pressure given by the opponent. This all came from a wrestling in the arms suggestion by Alwin Goethals from the SWART group in Belgium.

We also look at a new [for us] interpretation of the Zornhau Ort from Ringeck, developed from something that Hans Heim of Ochs said, that there is no step mentioned in the text of Ringeck. The idea we use is also strengthened by several pictures of Talhoffer 1467 showing “Crow foot” stances. There is also a new look at Zwerchau.

There is quite a bit of Fiore dagger, and some of the Fiore “Striking System” as an introduction, though done very simply. There is some stepping drills and some Fiore longsword drills as well, though mostly done for those new to the martial art.

There is also 1.33 drills for the discerning sword and buckler user. Plus several simple flow drills for hanging sword parries, and for buckler/shield parries.

We managed 2 of 6 video's on joining the discussion on the large centre gripped shield use theory, we will shoot the others some time this year.

Also a short piece on some of Sweatenhams quarterstaff techniques, which I think was the last we did on that day. Unfortunately the pole axe stuff from Paulus Kal will have to wait till later this year.

You will also find footage of the best of the Arts of Mars Test Cutting Extravaganza. Especially look out for the langesmesser made by Stefan Roth, probably one of the best sword makers there is. It is the one that cuts without effort, and the longsword that does that as well is by Stefan, by coincidence..............................:-)

Thanks to all my students and friends of AOM who made the day so enjoyable and enriching, especially Stefan Jorrens and Roman Radberger my co-instructors.

Enjoy.

Just a note: I am happy to discuss anything on the video's though my time available for discussion is short at the moment with two active boys running around the place, so I just want to mention that I will not be able to respond to many long discussions, and sometimes I will be very short in my reply.

All the best

so im starting to believe that people are inherently lazy these days, especially in terms of thinking and its depressing.

More and more im seeing people switch off their brains especially when a computer gets involved. It is as if with the proliferation of the internet and the ease with which people can get information (at least some of us with google fu skills) that the general population has stopped thinking and instead are relying more and more that someone on the internet can find the answer for them.

The ability to process information is equally lacking. if the answer isn't in a 5 sentence paragraph with highlighting of the relevant part, people dont seem to be able to find it.
in short people have started to piss me off no end and i dont think the lack of sleep is helping.

Hello everyone,

A few months ago we decided to allow newly registered users to activate their own accounts via an email link. This was done because it became tedious to constantly check for, verify and activate new user accounts; and new registrations started piling up as we became too lazy to deal with them.

Unfortunately the open registrations caught the attention of spammers all over the world. It took but a few months for our once peaceful forum to become Spam Central (mostly in the form of ads hidden in user profiles), spoiling the experience of a nice clean forum and also making me want to kill people.

So... today I deleted 50+ spam user accounts and set up a brand new user invitation system. Effective immediately, it is no longer possible to register on the MACS Forums without an invitation from an already registered member. Registered users are welcome to request invitations from me or another admin user using the PM system or via email (please include your username). After an admin member has given you an invite, you can send it to anyone via the User Control Panel. The invited user can then register using their unique invitation code. Their newly registered account will be activated immediately and automatically.

Thanks to everyone who alerted me whenever spam messages popped up in the past. I hope the new system works well. And I hope this will be the end of spam on the forums. Comments / suggestions are welcome.

Dear all,

Our first Saturday competitive sparring session will be held on February the 5th at 10am.

Here's the concept:

We would like to incentivise people to take part in competitive sparring, but we realise everybody will not be able to make every session. We also realise that some weapons have fewer devotees, but those people still want to fight. Therefore, we will institute a "league" setup to run parallel to the individual tournaments. Tournament bouts count for league standings, but competitive fights held outside of a tournament setup also count for league standings. Thus, if three people want to fight sword and buckler, they can as league bouts, rather than as a tournament (3 people in a tournament seems a little low...). Thus we have winners of individual tournaments, and winners of leagues run over a complete year.

We currently have the following weapons: longsword, single sword, sword and buckler, steel rapier, steel rapier and dagger. Armoured combat would be nice, as would staff, but doesn't make much sense at the moment. Thus we have five leagues in which to compete, and we can add an overall league as well. Hannes will work out the exact mechanics of the league, but you will be awarded points according to the ranking gap between you and your opponent- i.e. you get less points if you beat somebody below you on the ladder, more if they are above you. In order to be in the running for the end of the year, you must fight a certain number of fights in each league.

We hope to hold 20 competitive sparring sessions during the year (roughly 1 every two weeks). Owing to the Roberts's move to the new house, sessions will be held on the 5th and 26th of February. There will be a longsword tournament each of these days, and then time for other league sparring.

Competitive bout rules:
1) A competitive bout consists of 10 passes.
2) A pass is concluded when a definitive hit has been delivered. However, if a definitive hit is immediately followed by a counterhit (afterblow) delivered after, the counterhit will mark the end of the pass.
3) Each bout should be judged by 2 or more people, who will also act as safety marshalls. The judges are allowed to consult with the fighters about whether a hit landed, but can overrule the fighters if they had a clear view. At least 2 judges must agree on a hit before it is awarded. If there is no agreement, that pass is refought. Ideally 4 judges should be used. Any judge can yell "Halt" when a hit is seen, but it is recommended the action be allowed to contine for a few seconds after a hit.
4) A formal scoresheet with the results will be submitted to the league co-ordinator after each bout.
5) Rules for the scoring of points can vary from weekend to weekend, but 10 scored passes should eliminate any judging discrepancies.

Rules for this Saturday:
1) All areas are valid, as are all moves.
2) Hits to the area above the shoulders (i.e. the head and tops of the shoulders) count 3 points, as this is a vital area to protect.
3) Hits to the legs below the hips (clear leg hits) count 2 points, as these areas are difficult to attack safely.
4) Hits to the arms and torso count 1 point.
5) Successful throws and disarms are worth 2 points.
6) Points are scored against the hit person (i.e. you get hit on the head, 3 points are scored against you)
7) If a double hit or afterblow is delivered, both points are scored as per the rules above. Thus, if you hit my legs and I then hit your head, you have 3 points scored against you, and I have 2 points scored against me.
8) The winner after 10 passes is the person who has lost least points.

Hope that is clear, hope to see you there
